The Recurve Bow

Recurve bows closely resemble modern compound bows with the exception of one non-changing attribute, the tips of the recurve bow face away from the archer. As you can see in the recurve bow pictured above a portion of the string actually touches the bow away from its anchor point.
The key benefit to this defining feature is that it allows for greater energy storage in a smaller bow and allows the recurve bow to be used in places that a longbow would prove cumbersome. The recurve bow stores more draw energy in a smaller package.
The tradeoff to storing more energy is an equivalent amount of strain on the bows materials. Modern recurve limbs limbs are often made from many layers of fibreglass or from carbon and/or wood over a light core and can be manufactured to close tolerances which ensures a consistent performance. The recurve bow is also a noisier bow which should be considered when bowhunting.
Did you know? Olympic Archery allows only one type of bow, the recurve bow.
Compound Bow Attachments and Accessories
The clicker - a small device attached to the riser that will drop off when the desired draw length is reached. The clicker promotes consistency of draw weight with each shot.
The kisser - a button placed directly on the bowstring that the archer touches to his or her face during the draw, the kisser also prmotes vertical consistency.
Stabilizers - weighted rods that are attached to a recurve bow and designed to reduce the effects of torque and vibration. It generaly points in the same direction as the arrow.
Did you know? Old compound bows may appear backwards when unstrung.
The International International Archery Federation put this great video together from the 1996 Olympic games archive footage that is well worth a look. You’ll get a good feel of how things have progressed over time (check out those hats! you’ll see what I mean). Even the arrows have changed.
